Does ITIN Expire?

An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is an identification number that allows foreign nationals who are not eligible to obtain a Social Security Number (SSN) to file a federal income tax return. So, the question is once you obtain ITIN, will this number ever expire? Unlike EIN, the answer is yes, although there are certain conditions.

If your ITIN has not been used on a federal tax return at least once in three consecutive years or the middle two digits of your ITIN among the ones listed in (https://www.irs.gov/individuals/itin-expiration-faqs) the ITIN will expire at the end of the year. If your number has expired, the renewal process will be similar to the initial application. W-7 form must be filled and submitted to the IRS along with valid identification.

Please note that the IRS does not recommend renewal of an ITIN if the ITIN holder has become eligible to apply for a social security number (SSN).
